On an emotional night for the Lincoln
High School community, the Hornets were unable to overcome an
early St. Augustine lead and came up a touchdown short, falling to
the Saints 41-34.
St. Augustine did a nice job bouncing back
from their loss to Scripps Ranch last week, scoring twice in the
first quarter to take a 13-0 lead.
After a two-yard touchdown run by Keith
Patterson to get Lincoln on the board in the second quarter,
Saints quarterback Evan Crower connected with Dana Barbaro for a
60-yard score to give St. Augustine a 20-8 lead going into the
half.
The second half started with another St.
Augustine score, this time Crower hitting Daniel Hiser from 30
yards out. Lincoln responded with Ronald Yell connecting
with Tony Crosland for a 35-yard touchdown pass, plus a
successful two-point conversion. The Saints had an answer
for that as well. Crower tossed his 5th touchdown pass of
the game, firing a pass to Connor Hoffman that went for 78
yards.
Lincoln added another touchdown before the
end of the quarter on a Davon Dunn 8-yard TD run to close the
gap. But the Hornets were continually fighting back from
two or three scores down, which was a tough mountain to climb.
Anthony Cometa scored the Saints lone
rushing touchdown early in the 4th quarter. Lincoln made
the game close, as Davon Dunn tossed a touchdown pass to Victor
Dean after starting quarterback Ronald Yell was shaken up during
that drive. Yell did come back into the game to hit Dean
for another TD. But after a failed onside kick, the Saints
were able to run out the clock to close out the game.
St. Augustine moves to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in
league play. Lincoln falls to 5-2 and 0-2 in league.
The Saints are at Mira Mesa next week,
while Lincoln travels to Scripps Ranch.
