Saints traveled to San Pasqual for their annual match up against a well coached, disciplined and physical team. After beating the Eagles last year, hopes were running high that we could pull off another upset - this time on their home field. The game started with a long 69 yard San Pasqual drive, ending in a TD. The Saints defense appeared confused at times and the Eagles took quick advantage. However, Saints responded by putting together a long drive of their own. Saints quarterback David Popkins, sidelined with an injured shoulder, was replaced by Junior Daniel Hiser. Hiser made a couple of quick completions and scrambled for a first down. But it was the bulldog running of Daniel Butler that got the Saints deep into Eagle territory. The drive stalled and Saints was forced to kick a field goal. Brynmor Hughes booted the ball through the uprights from 36 yards out (the kick would have been good from 46 yds) to make it 7 - 3, San Pasqual. The Eagles put together another drive and marched 67 yards for another TD, making it 14 - 3. At this point the Saints defense made adjustments and shut down the Eagles for the rest of the half, allowing only 50 total yards in the 2nd quarter. The offense looked to make a game of it late in the 2nd quarter by marching 73 yards to the San Pasqual 10 yard line before turning the ball over on an interception. This was to become the night's theme..."Turnover". The second half started as a defensive struggle with both team's offenses going 3 and out. Saints started their second drive of the half at their own 16, marched 16 yards and turned the ball over on another interception. 54 seconds later it was 21 - 3, San Pasqual. Saints defense continued to shut down the Eagle offense allowing only 26 total yards in the second half. Unfortunately, Saint's offense was unable to sustain any momentum and turned the ball over five times in the game. The Eagles scored once more in the third quarter, kicking a 39 yard field goal after another Saints turnover. Trying to shake things up, Coach Ralph sent lineman Chris Pousson in at quarterback in the fourth quarter. On the first possession with Pousson in at QB he through a long bomb down the right sideline and nearly completed the pass. Once the Eagles realized what a strong arm he had they made adjustments and prevented any more long passes. It's not known how long Popkins will be out, but with a little more playing time, Hiser looks like he can make things happen. Maybe this coming week against Lincoln will be the turning point.
The final score: Saints 3, Eagles 24.
